Palestinian-Israeli Conflict For Beginners

January 21, 2009 at 9:52 pm (Articles) (, )

The CORE issues of the Palestinian-Israeli are the collective dispossession and ethnic cleansing (compulsory population transfer to achieve political objectives) of the Palestinian people for the past five decades. In our opinion, the conflict would have been at the same level of intensity even if both parties had been Jewish, Muslims, or Christians.

We have compiled the following articles to introduce the reader to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict:

How Israel’s Propaganda Machine Works

January 18, 2009 at 10:09 am (Articles) (, , )

By Dr. James Zogby

As in past Mideast conflicts, both the media story line and political commentary here in the U.S. has closely followed Israel’s talking points on the war. This has been an essential component in Israel’s early success and in its ability to prolong fighting without U.S. pushback. Because it recognizes the importance of the propaganda war, Israel fights on this front as vigorously and disproportionately as it engages on the battlefield.

Here’s how they have done it:

1) Define the terms of debate, and you win the debate. Early on, the Israelis work to define the context, the starting point, and the story line that will shape understanding of the war. In this instance, for example, they succeeded by constant repetition, in establishing the notion that the starting point of the conflict was December 19th, the end of the six-month ceasefire (which Israel described as “unilaterally ended by Hamas”). In doing so, they ignored, of course, their own early November violations, and their failure to honor their commitment in the ceasefire to open Gaza’s borders. They also ignored their having reduced Gaza into a dependency, a process which began long before and continued after their withdrawal in 2005. Because they know that most Americans do not closely follow the conflict and are inclined to believe, as the line goes, “what they hear over and over again,” this tactic of preemptive definition and repetition succeeds.

2) Recognize that stereotypes work. Because, for generations, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been defined with positive cultural images of Israel and negative stereotypes of Palestinians, Israel’s propagandists have an advantage here that is easy to exploit. Because the story has long been seen as “Israeli humanity confronting the Palestinian problem,” media coverage of any conflict begins with how “the problem” is affecting the Israeli people. As Golda Meir once put it, “We can forgive the Arabs for killing our children, but we can never forgive them for making us kill their children.” And so, it was not surprising that, despite the disproportionate suffering of the Palestinians, media coverage attempted to “balance” the story, giving an extensive treatment, with photos of anguished and fearful Israelis and the impact the war was having on them. Early on, when media treatment mattered most, Palestinians were reduced, as always, to mere numbers or objectified as “collateral damage.”

3) Anticipate and count on your opponent’s blunders. Hamas’ stupidity played into Israel’s strategy. From the outset, Israel could count on the fact that Hamas would launch rockets and issue the kind of threats that Israel could then parley into sympathy in the West. Knowing that these would most certainly come, and could be exploited, was an advantage in their propaganda war.

4) Be everywhere, and say the same thing —and make sure your opponents remain as invisible as possible. Israel begins each war with a host of English-speaking spokespersons (many born in the West) available at any time for every media outlet (it’s no accident, for example, that Israel has an “Arab” Consul General in Atlanta – that’s where CNN is). The work of their propaganda operation, which spreads multiple spokespersons in venues across the United States with consistent talking points, guarantees success. At the same time, they are able to deny media access to Gaza, only allowing the Western reporters to operate near the war zone under IDF supervision, guaranteeing Israel the opportunity to shape every aspect of the story while removing the possibility of independent verification of the horror unfolding in Gaza.

5) Give no ground. Since half of the story will be determined by what political leaders say and do, the political apparatus in Washington is also pressed into service, ensuring that White House and Congressional leadership will “toe the line.” Statements issued by Congress, therefore, reflect the talking points and, together, the Israeli spokespersons, the political commentators, and the Congressional statements serve as echoes of one another.

6) Deny, deny, deny. When events and reality break through, contradicting the Israeli-established narrative, creating stories that run counter to the imposed story line, the propaganda machine works overtime to deny, deny, deny (saying quite boldly, “Who do you believe, me or your lying eyes?”), and/or concoct a counter-narrative that shifts the blame (“We didn’t do it, they made us”). In this instance, that means asserting that the death of Palestinian civilians is always the fault of someone else, or that reporters or their opponents are staging the photos of grief (as if to say, “Arabs don’t really grieve like we do”).

7) The last refuge…. When all else fails, point to a few examples of outrageous anti-Semitism, generalize them, suggesting that that is what motivates critics. It stings, and may be over-used, but it can silence or put critics on the defensive.

Gaza Victory – Ayatollah Khamenei’s Letter to Ismail Haniya

January 17, 2009 at 8:45 am (News) (, , , )

The following is the text of Ayatollah al-Udma Sayyed Ali Hussaini Khamenei’s letter to Ismail Haniya, the Prime minister of Palestine on 18 Muharram 1430 [Jan. 16, 2009]:

پيام به آقاي اسماعيل هنيّه نخست وزير دولت قانوني ماس

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

Dear Mujahid Brother Ismail Haniya,

Peace be upon you for your patience. The 20-day perseverance of you, the courageous resistance fighters and the people of Gaza against one of the most atrocious war crimes in the history of the world has hoisted the flag of glory overhead the Islamic Ummah. You have proven that Muslim hearts filled with confidence in God and the Day of Judgment, which will not bow to oppression, can create such heroism that will bring the arrogant powers of the world and their well-equipped armies to their knees. The army, which you have managed with your perseverance to keep outside Gaza City for the past 20 days, is the same army that took large portions of three Arab states in just six days. You must be proud of your unshakable faith in God Almighty and his promises, you must be proud of your courage, patience and sacrifices, as today, the whole of the Muslim world is proud of it. Your resistance has brought shame on the US, the Zionist regime and their supporters, the United Nations, and the hypocrites in the Islamic Ummah. Today, not only Muslim nations, but also many European and American nations have acknowledged your righteousness. In our eyes, you are victorious today and with the continuation of your resistance, you will further bring shame to the enemy. You must remember that “Your Lord has not forsaken you, nor has He become displeased,” and that “Soon your Lord will give you so that you shall be well pleased,” God willing. Nevertheless, atrocities committed in Gaza and the death of innocent Palestinians, especially the children, has deeply saddened us. Our entire nation is in mourning because of the crimes committed by the occupiers of Palestine which are broadcast from our television channels everyday. May God make your reward great and hasten your victory. As God Almighty never goes back on His promises and has said “And surely Allah will help him who helps His cause; most surely Allah is Strong, Mighty” and “Those who strive, strive for their own good …” Those in the Arab world who have committed treachery must know that a fate no better than that of the Jews involved in the Battle of the Confederates [al-Ahzab] will befall them, as God almighty has said “He also brought down their allies among the people of the scripture from their secure positions …” The nations of the world stand beside the people and resistance fighters of Gaza. Any government that goes against the will of its nation will further distance itself from its people and the fate of such government is obvious.. They must remember that the Commander of the Faithful, peace be upon him, has said “Living a life of defeat is death and a death with dignity is life.” I salute you and the resistance fighters of Gaza and the oppressed and resistant people of Gaza. Aside from the Islamic Republic of Iran’s government efforts to provide aid for you, which is our duty, I pray for you day and night. I wish you patience and victory from God Almighty. Peace be upon you and peace be upon righteous servants of God and so may God’s mercy and blessings.

UN says Israel deliberately targeting civilians

January 11, 2009 at 12:59 pm (News) (, , , )

Spokesman for the UN Relief and Works Agency Christopher Gunness told reporters that UNRWA is “99.9 percent certain” that there was no militants or military activity in the UN School compound, and called for an independent investigation into the incident.

Israel on Tuesday bombed a UN-run school building, being used to shelter people who had fled their homes, killing 40 people, UN officials say

The Israeli military said its soldiers had come under mortar fire from Hamas militants inside the school.

A spokesman for Hamas denied there had been any hostile fire coming from the school.

Israel has killed or maimed several hundred children and women on over 1,000 bombardments since December 27.

The Resolution of Muslim students in the last day of the sit-in in front of the Egyptian Interest Section in Tehran

January 11, 2009 at 12:56 pm (News) (, , , , )

Mesr_87-10-12_%20%281%29.jpgIn the Name of God, the Compassionate the Merciful

Two weeks have passed from the barbarous aggression of the Zionist Regime to Gaza. It has been two weeks that the Zionist regime , by killing the Palestinians, has once again not only disgraced itself but also the Arabs.

The onslaught on Gaza has reminded us that 60 years have passed from the massacre of Muslims and the occupation of Palestine. It has also shown to the world that the claimant of the human rights violate them even in their words and proved to the Arabs self-degradation and the illegitimacy of their governments.

O Muslim Student in Iran , Saudi Arabia, Pakistan , Egypt and other parts of the world! Lest you forget what God and His prophet expect from us! Lest you forget that a Muslim cannot see his brother drowned in blood and his sister homeless and keep silent! We should not forget that the God’s religion is the religion of struggle against oppression and dignity and not a religion of debasement , lowliness and abjectness that has gripped the Muslim leaders.

The sit-in of the last few days proved to us that the Egyptian Government and its Pharaoh is not courageous enough to fulfill our truth-seeking demand and rescue our Muslim Arab brothers and sisters. But Zionism and its agents should know that Iran would not be their safe nest any more. The companies affiliated with Zionism should know that they cannot do business in Iran and take from us the money for the bullets and bombs they drop on the people of Gaza. The Arab leaders should know that if they do not respond to the call of the Palestinians and stop supporting the human-killing machine of the Zionists , they’ll find their governments toppled and with the help of God and the endeavor of Muslim nations they would be buried , along with their master Israel, in the cemetery of the History.

Now we, the Muslim students, avow , in obedience to our leader Ayatollah Khamenei, not to stop supporting the people of Gaza and to do whatever we can for the victory of Muslims against the Army of the Heathens . We ask God Almighty , for the sake of the dignity and grace of the blood of Imam Hussein, to precipitate the return of our lord Imam Mahdi so that he would rescue all the oppressed people of the world from the claws of the God-denying oppressors. ” Victory is from Allah and Opening is close”

Iran will do whatever needed to help Gaza

January 8, 2009 at 4:37 pm (News) (, , , )

Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei said Thursday that Israel and America by their gut-wrenching atrocities in Gaza actually seek to annihilate the foundation of resistance in the significant Middle East region and subsequently take rein of its riches and benefits.

Ayatollah Khamenei described the massacre of children, women and the innocent people in Gaza at the hands of the Zionists as a rare tragedy, adding however that the developments will definitely lead to victory of truth over falsehood thanks to God’s assistance, the firm resolve of the Palestinian combatants and the presence of nations in the scene.

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks in a public meeting coincided with the Ashura anniversary when the third Shii Imam, Hazrat Hussein ibn Ali (A.S.) was martyred in a battle against the bullying rulers of his time, 13 centuries ago.

The IR Leader said the message of the unforgettable Ashura epic event was that the Islamic ummah must keep vigilant adding that Imam Hussein taught the nations to bear their responsibility of keeping vigilance towards any sort of hidden conspiracies and adopt a timely and brave action to counter them, albeit incurring some necessary price to foil the conspiracies.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the Zionist bloodshed in Gaza also has a covert side which enshrouds some conspiracy to annihilate the foundation of resistance in the region and consequently take rein of the riches in the Middle East. Ayatollah Khamenei urged the Muslim nations and government to heed the point and adopt an appropriate action to counter the conspiracy.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the Big Satan and the Usurper Israel also sought an identical objective in their 33-day war against Lebanon in summer 2006 but to no avail.

“They sought to produce a kowtow Middle East. Their hodgepodge of dreams failed to realize as brave, sacrificing and faithful Lebanese youths delivered a hard slap in the mouth of America, Israel and all their cronies,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

Ayatollah Khamenei then touched on an official acknowledgment in the West that the Islamic Republic of Iran had stood model for regional resistance.

“They have admitted too that the Islamic Iran thanks to its people’s vigilance is viewed by the regional nations as a spectacular paradigm of resistance and victory. The domineering powers have now targeted the innocent, democratic government of Hamas as a stage of their conspiracy to annihilate the resistance,” Ayatollah Khameeni said.

The IR Leader then warned against theindifferent governments in the region that if the enemies of Islam got success at the stage for sure they would not leave alone other parts of the Middle East. “The Islamic states which have refused to help Palestine should understand the dangerous consequences of their mistakes.”

Ayatollah Khamenei said the awakening of nations and their presence in the scene was an important factor in boosting the Palestinian resistance.

“I especially thank the faithful youths who gathered in airports and other places and announced their wish to go to Gaza. But I must note that our hands are bound in this regard,” the IR Leader added.

“Nevertheless, everybody should know that the Islamic Republic will do whatever needed to help innocent Palestinian people as it has already done in the past,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The Islamic Revolution Leader called the efforts of some Islamic governments in support of the people of Gaza as good but insufficient. “By constant political and public pressures, we should force the enemy to withdraw,” Ayatollah Khamenei urged.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the tragedy of Gaza shed the reputation of the wrold’s fake human rights advocates.

“The shelterless children and the oppressed women of Gaza fall on the ground every day like autumn leaves while no utterance is heard from the United Nations, or other organizations who claims are advocating human rights or Western governments including the European governments. The bitter reality shows the insincerity and deceit of the organizations and governments who claim they are defending human rights.”

Ayatollah Khameeni Expressed deep regret that some intellectuals, press and media within the Islamic world had directed their attacks at Palestine’s legal government or had justified the Zionist crimes.

“These people will for sure be responsible in front of God for their complicity with the criminals. Fortunately in the Islamic Iran, the solid unanimity of people and government has led to a laudable support for the oppressed Palestinians.”

Ayatollah Khamenei said that the Gaza developments will definitely lead to victory of truth over falsehood, adding that even if the enemy, God forbid, got success to kill all resistance fighters and Palestinian strugglers, the Palestinian cause would not vanish.

“No doubt, Palestine thanks to its experiences would rise up in front of the enemy very much stronger than before and would finally overcome them,” the IR Leader added.

“God willing, all Muslim nations will celebrate their victory in a near future,” the IR Leader promised.

They were once victims of a Holocaust: Really?

January 3, 2009 at 6:02 pm (Articles) (, , )

by Yamin Zakaria

The carnage in Gaza follows the carnage in Lebanon, Jenin, and Qana. The list will continue to grow as Israel with American fuel maintains the onslaught against the Palestinians and other Arab states. In line with the Jewish tradition, the Israelis are claiming to be the innocent victim. Just the body count alone tells the real story of who is the real victim in this asymmetric conflict.

It is difficult to fathom how a nation can behave in such a belligerent manner after it had allegedly lost six million in a relatively recent Holocaust, that took place during the Second World War, and some are still alive from that episode. If a nation genuinely suffered such losses in one tragic episode, they would show utmost restraint in killing innocent civilians. Moreover, one would expect them to be at the forefront in opposing the persecution of another group of people, let alone engage in such activities.

If it were the Germans instead of the Palestinians, that would make sense, as vengeance is a natural response. However, the Palestinians and Arabs had no connection with the Nazis in Germany. Europe commits the crime against the Jews; the people in the Middle East (Muslims and Christians) pay the price. This is unjust and illogical. Even more so, when you consider that historically the Jews have always prospered under Muslim rule, particularly under the ‘fundamentalist’ Caliphate that was constantly waging Jihad!

From Istanbul to Granada, the Jews lived happily without facing the regular inquisitions and pogroms of Christian Europe. A challenge for the Muslims is to convey the facts to the ignorant American masses, undoing the brainwashing done by the nasty mass media filled with mini Joseph Gobbles, so that they would at least see the Middle East with their two eyes, instead of one, like a one-eyed Dajjal.

Israel is claiming that it acted in self-defence, in response to the rockets fired by Hamas. As if it was entirely a unilateral provocation from Hamas without any prior cause. Let us assume the Israeli claims to be true. It is also true that Israel possesses huge technological advantage, with a fully equipped conventional armed force in comparison to Hamas. Even the analogy of David and Goliath would not be apt here. Under such circumstances, they should have sent ground troops, selectively targeting the Hamas fighters. Instead, they took the easy option, resorted to the aerial bombardment, which is indiscriminate by its nature, and not surprisingly led to the killing of innocent civilians and destroyed the infrastructure of the place bringing more chaos and suffering. Thus, everyone is talking about the cowardly disproportionate Israeli response.

How is the civilian casualty justified now? Tzipi Livni, the Israeli foreign minister, told the US media “”Unfortunately in a war … sometimes also civilians pay the price”. Then, the same argument should apply when Hamas kills Israeli civilians, but it does not. If we are to be consistent both sides are terrorists for engaging in killing civilians, otherwise the label of terrorism should be discarded as nothing other than a term of war propaganda. It also follows, the more civilians you kill, the bigger the terrorist you are. So it is Israel that wins the title here but overall trailing well behind the US.

Indeed, if this situation were reverse, for example, Tel Aviv bombed by Syria or Iran, the mass media would have gone into a frenzy calling it Arab Terrorism or Islamic Terrorism. For sure, the UN would have been a lot more active, producing endless resolutions. If the Muslims can create Islamic terrorism, surely the Jews can create Judaic terrorism. Accordingly, can the Arabs/Muslims call the bombing of Gaza as an example of Judaic terrorism or Jewish terrorism? There are ample grounds to claim, this sort of Israeli action is the product of the racist, Talmudic laws and values, which considers the gentiles (non-Jews) to be less than human beings. It is no secret, the Jewish ideology considers the Jews to be the chosen race of God, and the rest by implication are something less. Perhaps this is why Israel sees the death of 3 or 4 Jews as enough to kill 300 or more Palestinians in line with its Judaic based ethos.

Let us not forget Savage Terrorism. Iraq can be a prime example of that, since George Bush, Tony Blair and many others in the US Administration have openly professed as being devout Christians. According to George Bush, God inspired him to wage this crusade in Iraq; the WMD was the Holy Grail demanded by King George Bush. Note the tacit approval of the Vatican and the Orthodox Church by their silence. For the US, the killing of foreigners in a large scale has been part of its Secular-Christian heritage, from the genocide of Native Americans to the Arabs. Historical facts clearly point to that tradition of the Wild West.

The reality of Gaza, Iraq, Afghanistan shows one thing, the Muslims are the ones being terrorised; they are the victims of state-led terrorism. Let us apply commonsense and ask: which inflicts more terror, a F16 fighter plane or a primitive home made rocket? Who has been terrorised, the Jews living in fortress Israel with 4 or 5 casualties or the Palestinians in Gaza with 400 plus? Truth is indeed the first casualty of war.

Stop the massacre of Gaza – Twenty-six things to do to bring peace with justice:

January 3, 2009 at 5:56 pm (Articles) (, , )

“The Israeli air-strikes on the Gaza Strip represent severe and massive violations of international humanitarian law as defined in the Geneva Conventions, both in regard to the obligations of an Occupying Power and in the requirements of the laws of war.” The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian.

(1) First get the facts and then disseminate them. Here are some basic background information:

(2) Contact local media. Write letters to editors (usually 100-150 words) and longer op-eds (usually 600-800 words) for local newspapers. But also write to news departments in both print, audio, and visual media about their coverage. In the US http://tinyurl.com/2jxwf You can find media listings in your country using search engines like google.

(3) Contact elected and other political leaders in your country to urge them to apply pressure to end the attacks. In the US, Contact the State Department at 202.647.5291, the White House 202-456-1111 the Egyptian Embassy 202.895.5400, Email (embassy@egyptembassy.net) and the Obama Transition Team 202-540-3000 (then press 2 to speak with a staff member).

(4) Organize and join demonstrations in front of Israeli and Egyptian embassies or when not doable in front of your parliament, office of elected officials, and any other visible place (and do media work for it).

(5) Hold a teach-in, seminar, public dialogue, documentary film viewing etc. this is straightforward: you need to decide venue, nature, if any speakers, and do some publicity (the internet helps).

(6) Pass out fliers with facts and figures about Palestine and Gaza in your community (make sure also to mention its relevance to the audience: e.g, US taxpayers paying for the carnage, increase in world instability and economic uncertainty).

(7) Put a Palestinian flag at your window.

(8) Wear a Palestinian head scarf (Koufiya)

(9) Wear Black arm bands (this helps start conversations with people).

(10) Send direct aid to Gaza through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). http://www.un.org/unrwa/

(11) Initiate boycotts, divestments and sanctions at all levels and including asking leaders to expel the Israeli ambassadors (an ambassador of an apartheid and rogue state). See Palestinian call http://tinyurl.com/94aafw

(12) Work towards bringing Israeli leaders before war crime courts (actions along those lines in courts have stopped Israeli leaders from traveling abroad to some countries like Britain where they may face charges).

(13) Calling upon all Israelis to demonstrate in front of their war ministry and to more directly challenge their government

(14) Do outreach: to neighbours and friends directly. Via Internet to a lot of others (you can join and post information to various listservs/groups).

(15) Start your own activist group or join other local groups (simple search in your city with the word Palestine could identify candidate groups that have previously worked on issues of Palestine). Many have also been successful in at bringing coalitions from different constituencies in their local areas to work together (human rights group, social and civil activists, religious activists, etc).

(16) Develop a campaign of sit-ins at government offices or other places where decision makers aggregate.

(17) Do a group fast for peace one day and hold it in a public place.

(18) Visit Palestine (e.g. with http://www.sirajcenter.org)

(19) Support human rights and other groups working on the ground in Palestine.

(20) Make large signs and display them at street corners and where ever people congregate.

(21) Contact local churches, mosques, synagogues, and other houses of worship and ask them to take a moral stand and act. Call on your mosque to dedicate this Friday for Gaza actions.

(22) Sign petitions for Gaza, e.g. http://tinyurl.com/8nt5on

(23) Write and call people in Gaza, they need to hear from the outside world.

(24) Work with other groups that do not share your political views (factionalism and excessive divisions within activist communities allowed those who advocate war to succeed).

(25) Dedicate a certain time for activism for peace every day (1 hour) and think of more actions than what are listed above.

(26) Urge your local radio talk shows and news editors to call any of us here in Palestine to report live what is happening on the ground.

For support and contacts of people in Gaza or to volunteer, please contact the Palestinian Center for Rapprochement Between People, via gaza@imemc.org, or call +1-989-607-9480 (from the US and Canada) or +972-2-277-2018 (from other places).

Pro-Gaza hackers target Israeli websites

January 3, 2009 at 5:51 pm (Articles) (, , , )

Since an Israeli military campaign against the Gaza Strip began on Saturday, various Israeli websites have come under cyber attack.

The widely-circulated Israeli daily’s website, Ynetnews.com, has been defaced and is now a picture guide to the progressive takeover of Palestinian land by settlers since 1946.

The website, which is widely acknowledged as pro-Zionism, also draws parallels between the US conduct in Iraq and the Israeli siege on Gaza with a picture showing Palestinian victims of Israeli attacks above an image of American soldiers torturing detainees in Abu Ghraib prison.

Hackers also hacked into the Bank Discount website on Friday, according to Ha’aretz, publishing further messages in condemnation of Israeli crimes.

Bank officials responded by assuring customers that their accounts had not been touched.

The number of websites defaced since the Saturday air operations against the Gaza Strip has reportedly been in the thousands with small businesses and vanity websites having been affected most.

“RitualistaS GrouP Hacked your System!!! The world isn’t insurance!!! For a better world,” PC World quoted the website of Israel’s Galoz Electronics Ltd as reading after it was hacked on Wednesday.

One hacker, called Cold Z3ro, claims to have hacked nearly 5,000 webpages, says Gary Warner, the director of research in computer forensics with the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Israel began air operations against the Gaza Strip — home to 1.5 million Palestinians — on Saturday. The attacks have so far left over 430 Palestinians dead and more than 2250 injured.

Israel says through its military campaign, it seeks to topple the Hamas movement, which took control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007 after winning the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) elections in January 2006.

In retaliation to the attacks on Gaza, Hamas has been launching rocket strikes against Israel. Unlike the state-of-the-art weapons and ammunition Israel holds, the homemade Qassam rockets rarely cause casualties.
